Box of Green

by Citrus Lane

Improving our boxes isn’t simply about changing the products that go inside—we are always looking for ways to make our boxes more sustainable overall. And we’re finding that even small adjustments can have a big, positive impact on the environment. Here are some of the steps we’ve taken to green our box and do our part to help preserve the Earth our little ones will one day inherit.

1. Smaller Box, Bigger Benefits

Pictured above to the left is the box that started it all: we call it our Classic box, and it was what we used from the day we started in 2011 till earlier this year. Our team looked for a better box size—one that would work well for shipping and cut down on waste, but could also still hold the products curated by our merchandising team. The result: the trimmer version we currently ship to subscribers, which we simply call the Small box. The Small box weighs 5.8 oz—that’s 2.7 oz (over 30%!) less than the Classic box.

To put this in even greater perspective, for every 1000 boxes we ship, we’ve cut our paper use by approximately 200 lbs. In addition, we can now ship over 1500 more boxes per truckload and thus use fewer vehicles to deliver your surprise goodies each month.

2. Going Solar

Have you noticed the new label on the bottom of your boxes? By harnessing the power of the sun, our new boxes aren’t just smaller, they’re made smarter. Our box supplier, Heritage, reduced their greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption by displacing electricity generated by fossil-fuel power plants.

For an added bonus, the yellow design on our boxes is now printed with all-natural soy-based ink. Soy-based inks are more environmentally friendly and are easier to recycle.

3. We’re Even Looking at the Tissue Paper

We’ll be honest—our team looked into doing away with the yellow tissue paper inside the boxes to further reduce paper use. No need to worry! The love our community has shown for the tissue paper has made it clear that it’s a box staple. Instead of doing away with the tissue completely, our team has cut down on the amount we put in. With the new Small box, only one piece of tissue paper is needed, as opposed to three. This may sound like a small change, but consider this: we’ve reduced the use of tissue paper by over 66% across the thousands of boxes we ship each month. That’s a lot of gift wrap!

A Greener Future

Our team continues to look for ways to improve our sustainability, by doing things like reducing use of cardboard, using tissue paper more efficiently, and fitting more boxes into fewer trucks. Small, simple acts like these can have an enormous, positive impact on the environment. We’re even asking our community how to reuse our boxes! As seen in our Acts of Green campaign, no act is too small—every act counts.

If you are really committed to “Acts of Green,” I’m sure you can figure out how to stop shipping local Bay Area boxes out of state and back again!

I love to reuse the boxes for storage and gifts. I also save the tissue paper to reuse that, however, the Citrus Lane seal does make it difficult to reuse the entire sheet…. I know this is a “trademark” but maybe you could eliminate these. Keep up the great work.

What if they had tissue paper printed with thier logo (green ink of course), for as much as they need the cost shouldn’t be much different then the cost of the stickers, then you could use it to give a gift that is something you recieved in the gift box. I know I have lots of friends with children and I’m already thinking of giving several innobaby ez grip teethers as gifts.

You could include a paper that had your refferal code to recieve $10 off if they subscribe to citrus lane. You would get to reuse the tissue, give a great gift to a friend and maybe get some refferals to save on your subscription.

I love the new boxes and the thought that went into every aspect of the change. We have been enjoying our Citrus Lane boxes for a year now and I LOVE the constant surprises. Thank you for being a company that I can feel secure in recommending to my friends and blog readers. =)
